Welcome to Planet Poi
Planet Poi runs poi making workshops at festivals and events to raise money for B.A.C.T. Bikers Against Child Trafficking. For more details please see our website.
Poi is a performance art using a ball or two suspended from a length of string held in the hand and swung in circular patterns. Poi originates from the Maori people of New Zealand and has since developed many forms enjoyed world wide as a hobby, exercise or performance art along side juggling and other forms of object manipulation.
Planet Poi provides all the materials necessary for the public to learn how to create their own poi and show them how to use them.
The poi we teach to make are called practice poi, which are very easy to use.
We have lots of fabulous material for a large spectrum of choice in design. All poi are created with no sewing involved so that all ages can create a set of poi with ease.
We have a simple pattern for creating a pair of poi - and a quick lesson on how to use them.
The skills to use them are easily learnt by all ages.
Each person/child can create and design their own set of poi to take home with them.
Planet Poi use reclaimed materials inside the workshop.

The diagram below shows you the length your poi
should be for you.
1 | 2 | |||
Maximum length: Standing in a position as shown in the picture to the left the total length of your Poi should not exceed the distance between the knuckles of your fingers and the ground. For tricks like buzz-saws or other moves played in front of or close to the body, the poi can still be wrapped around the hands to shorten them during spinning. | Stretch out your hand, away from the body and measure the distance between the middle of your thumb and your armpit. Your Poi should be slightly shorter if you are a beginner. Longer Poi would limit the number of moves you will be able to do, unless you know how to shorten your poi during spinning by wrapping them around your hands. Orbitaris |

ReplyDeleteDue to a stalker, I had to change my number, my website and business cards in 2012 for the poi workshop....due to the added expenses, I lost money and lost work due to losing financial stability and having to take my vehicle off the road. which made it difficult to work. I am a home-educator so my business was my only means of income. I have now ended my self employment and have to seek help from the government. I will however work the poi workshop locally to raise funds to campaign the fight against child trafficking inside our local community, ie leaflets etc...
